Butch Jones Won’t Commit To Starting Quarterback

Josh Dobbs appeared to take a stronghold on the starting quarterback job on Saturday night with his dynamic play, but Butch Jones wouldn’t commit to a starter after the game.

When asked about the Vols’ quarterback situation, Jones said “We’ll continue to compete like we do. We’ll continue to rep Nate and Dobbs. There’s no timetable on Worley.”

Jones added that he didn’t know for sure until Friday that Justin Worley wouldn’t be able to play on Saturday.

There’s no doubt that Tennessee’s offense played the best it has all season with Dobbs under center. There’s obviously still a lot of room for improvement, but they definitely progressed. The run game (181 yards against a stingy Bama defense), the offensive line and the quarterback play were all elevated on Saturday night.

I think you’ll see the Vols continue to go with Dobbs. There’s no way that Peterman (who proved ineffective) will get the start against South Carolina and I don’t think Worley will be ready (judging from the tone of Jones).

Jones sounded very encouraged by the play of Dobbs, saying “I thought Josh was poised. He was very calm and collected. He needs to build off his mistakes, which he will.”

Tennessee’s offense should look even better next week, if Dobbs is under center, with a full week for the staff to prepare.
