Former Tennessee Volunteers lead the updates on Rocky Top for Tuesday, July 5, but there is also disappointing news about potential new football players.

Happy day after the Fourth. Guess what! We’re less than two months away from the first college football game of the season.

Now begins the desperate countdown for all bored fans in the midst of the summer heat.

Sure, there’s some baseball to enjoy, but the wait for the real American sport is the biggest news, especially with all the NBA circus finally ending.

That being said, there is something else to pass the time this year before football season begins, and it’s the 2016 Olympics. For Tennessee, there is news in that realm as well.

And that’s where we begin today.

Multiple former Vols headed to Rio OlympicsJill Jelnick of WRCB-TV

"VFLs Justin Gatlin and Tianna Bartoletta earned spots on Team USA and Tennessee rising junior Christian Coleman stood out in the 100 meters on an exciting Day 3 of the 2016 U.S. Olympic Track & Field Team Trials at Hayward Field."

Former Vol WR Commitment Tee Higgins Chooses to Clemson – Ryan Callahan of 247Sports

"The 6-foot-4.5, 188-pound Higgins celebrated the Fourth of July by choosing the Tigers over the home-state Vols, along with Ohio State, Ole Miss and Florida State. He made his choice known in a Bleacher Report video he posted on his Twitter account that showed orange-and-purple fireworks lighting up the sky."

Tennessee Basketball rebuilding with eight newcomersC.L. Brown of ESPN

"This is what a program in transition looks like. Last season, Rick Barnes’ first at Tennessee, marked the third coach in three years for the Volunteers. Cuonzo Martin left unappreciated in 2014. Donnie Tyndall left under investigation in 2015. All of which left Barnes undermanned for 2016."
