Tennessee football players Jalen Reeves-Maybin, Josh Malone, and Jarrett Guarantano headline the Volunteers news on Rocky Top for Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2016.

We are a week and two days out! Football season is getting closer and closer on Rocky Top, and the academic year for athletics has already begun.

Soccer is underway, and volleyball is not far behind.

But in Knoxville, the big story is football season. Football remains king there, and the excitement can’t be much greater with the high Tennessee Vols expectations for 2016.

As we get set for the year, there are some updates on players based on the end of practice that we need to get to. That takes up the news for today.

Jalen Reeves-Maybin not sure his shoulder is 100 percent – Wes Rucker of 247Sports

"Jalen Reeves-Maybin playing well has become so ubiquitous that at this point it’s expected and essentially taken for granted. But the fact is Tennessee’s All-SEC senior linebacker has spent all preseason camp in a green, limited-contact jersey after undergoing shoulder surgery in the spring, and that even he doesn’t know exactly what to expect when the Vols open their season Sept. 1 against Appalachian State in Neyland Stadium."

Josh Malone expresses optimism in the passing game – Luke Slabaugh of WBIR

"Vols wide receiver Josh Malone said Monday he thinks the passing and catching game can be “explosive” in 2016.“I feel like we could’ve had an explosive game in the past,” Malone said. “Just with everybody being more comfortable in the system and everybody knowing the ins and outs, we can all rotate at all positions. The sky’s the limit.”"

Why Vols should get qb Jarrett Guarantano on the field – John Adams of USA TODAY Network

"Offensive coordinator Mike DeBord said last week that Guarantano is further along than anticipated for a freshman who didn’t arrive early and go through spring practice. Also, Guarantano’s teammates don’t hesitate to praise his throwing ability.Guarantano will have something else going for him when practice gives way to games: running ability."
