Today on Rocky Top: Florida Rivalry, Vols Improvements, Women’s Basketball Schedule

The Tennessee-Florida rivalry, improvements to the Volunteers, and the women’s basketball schedule headline the news on Rocky Top for Wednesday, Sept. 21.

We’re three days away from the Vols’ 2016 football season-defining game on Rocky Top. Tennessee-Florida boils the blood of everybody in Knoxville.

And all they can think about is ending the streak.

Amidst all the hype, the Gators have been talking a ton of trash. They know they are in Tennessee’s heads, and they want the Vols to feel it.

However, Butch Jones’s squad has been all about improving. As we get set to bring you the Tennessee football news for today, the improvements are what we’ll focus on.

But there is a bit of interesting history in the Tennessee-Florida rivalry. And there’s some women’s basketball news.

We’ll get to all of that.

First, though, let’s start with the focus on this week.

Vols’ DT Kahlil McKenzie: ‘We have to be better’ – Jonathan Toye of the Knoxville News Sentinel

"McKenzie suggested that the best way to handle the tough stretch is to take it one game at a time.“It’s pretty apparent, you know, that we have to be better to beat the teams that we have to play this season,” McKenzie said Tuesday. “We got to work to be 1-0 this week. We have a completely different opponent this week that can do a lot of things offensively and defensively.”"

Dobbs relishing another chance vs Gators – Patrick Brown of the Chattanooga Times Free Press

"The list of Tennessee quarterbacks to win a game at Florida isn’t long, and Josh Dobbs nearly joined the exclusive club last season when he ran for 136 yards, caught a 58-yard touchdown pass and guided the Volunteers to a two-score lead with only 10 minutes left in the game.Dobbs instead joined seven other starting quarterbacks the Vols have used during their 11-year losing streak to the Gators, but Saturday presents the senior his second and final shot at beating Florida."

Remember when the Vols owned Florida? – Mike Strange of USA TODAY Network

"Too bad there was no Twitter in the early years of the 21st Century. It would have been a lot easier for Tennessee to taunt the Florida Gators. That’s right. There was a time when the Vols had the swagger in the SEC East rivalry that resumes Saturday at Neyland Stadium."
