Butch Jones promoted Larry Scott to be new Tennessee football offensive coordinator. Check his press conference video for the Volunteers.

After a couple of weeks of speculation and searching, Butch Jones did not surprise anybody on Friday afternoon when he promoted Tennessee football special teams and tight ends coach to the Vols’ new offensive coordinator.

Scott takes part in a staff reshuffling that includes Charlton Warren replacing Willie Martinez as defensive backs coach and Mike Canales as the new quarterbacks coach.

Both the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach positions were previously held by Mike DeBord.

See Scott’s press conference about his new position here.

Scott was hired in-house after major high-profile candidates like Mark Helfrich were thrown around over the past couple of weeks.

Although he brings familiarity with the program and interim head coaching experience to the new position, he has never been a coordinator.

So the jury is definitely out on what he can do.

However, he was the co-offensive coordinator at a high school in Florida in 2004, and he has coached offensive line and tight end over the past 10 years.

So his experience is all over the offense outside of being a coordinator at the college level.

With Scott and Canales, Butch Jones has two offensive coaches now with deep ties to the Florida area.

Tennessee brought in Scott as an assistant in 2016, and it was his first coaching or playing job at any level outside of the state of Florida.

And while Scott played at South Florida as an offensive tackle from 1996 to 1999, Canales was his offensive coordinator there his final three years.

They worked together again at South Florida from 2007 to 2009, when Canales went from passing game coordinator to offensive coordinator and Scott was the tight end and offensive line coach in different years.

So the two have ties working together as player-coach and coach-coach relationships. Only this is the first time Canales is working under Scott as opposed to the other way around.

Now, they bring their talents to Knoxville to work together.
