Tennessee Vols Morning Report: Football Series with BYU, Major Softball Upset

A football series with BYU, a big upset by the softball team, and the Lady Tennessee Vols headline the Volunteers news for Friday, Feb. 24, 2017.

Thursday was a day of winning for the Tennessee Vols. And in a couple of cases, they didn’t just win on the court or the field.

As we get set to bring you the news on Rocky Top for the last Friday in February of 2017, the warm weather and college baseball and softball season being in play give you a great feel of spring being right around the corner.

But on top of all that, we had some major shocking news about the future football schedules to bring you as well, so we’ll get to that quickly.

And there’s a preview to bring you.

But let’s start with the football news.

Tennessee football schedules home and home with BYU – Ryan Callahan, GoVols247

The Tennessee Vols will have a home and home series with BYU in 2019 and 2023. By doing this, they are playing a huge role in helping the Cougars make their case to join a Power Five conference, which is looking more and more likely by the day.

"The first-ever game between the Vols and Cougars is slated for Sept. 7, 2019, in Knoxville. That game completes Tennessee’s 2019 non-conference schedule, which also includes home games against Georgia State (Aug. 31), Chattanooga (Sept. 14) and UAB (Nov. 2).The second game of the series is scheduled for either Sept. 1 or Sept. 2, 2023, at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo, Utah. It will be the first time Tennessee ever has played in the state of Utah."

Softball Vols upset defending national champions in winning two games Thursday – UTSports

No. 15/13 Tennessee Vols softball team moved to 12-0 on Thursday after winning two more games, and one was a huge 2-1 upset over the defending national champion Oklahoma Sooners. After that, they beat UC Santa Barbara 8-3.

"The Volunteers followed their impressive win over No. 4/5 Oklahoma with another over the Gauchos to improve to 12-0 on the year, their best start since going 14-0 to begin the 2014 season. Gregg’s four RBIs marked the third time already this season that she has had three or more in a game. Matty Moss also had a solid performance in the circle, tossing a complete game while setting a new career high with 10 strikeouts."

Four Lady Vols on rosters for Jordan Brand Classic – Jonathan Hawthorne, ESPN Women

The recruiting of the Tennessee Lady Vols is showing for next year with four of their prospects playing in the Jordan Brand Classic this year. They join three future UCONN Huskies in headlining the game.

"The game will be held April 14 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.Evina Westbrook, the No. 2 prospect in the country,Rennia Davis, Anastasia Hayes and Kasiyahna Kushkituah are the four future Lady Vols who were chosen for the annual event."

Lady Vols come back to beat Florida 74-70 – Dan Fleser, Knoxville News Sentinel 

Diamond DeShields came off the bench in her return from injury, and she managed to take over the game with Holly Warlick’s team in danger of a terrible upset at home. Thanks to her near triple-double, Tennessee held on for a victory over the Gators.

"Tennessee saved senior night in dramatic fashion on Thursday.Down seven points with three minutes left, the Lady Vols rallied for a 74-70 SEC women’s basketball victory over Florida before a crowd of 9,968 at Thompson-Boling Arena."

Tennessee Vols baseball set to begin the Tony Gwynn Classic – UTSports

Right now they are 3-1 in Dave Serrano’s sixth season as head coach of the program, coming off taking two of three in the series against the Memphis Tigers last week and then winning a midweek game. Now they have a huge weekend of baseball to really get the season going.

"Tennessee Baseball continues its week-long road trip in Southern California with a weekend in San Diego, taking part in the 2017 Tony Gwynn Classic hosted by the University of San Diego and San Diego State (Feb. 24-25).The Volunteers are set to play a Friday doubleheader against the Seton Hall Pirates (2-2) and tournament co-host San Diego State Aztecs (3-2) before facing off against UC Irvine (2-1) in a tournament finale on Saturday."
