Former Tennessee football offensive coordinator and Duke Blue Devils Head Coach David Cutcliffe commented on the Volunteers’ Athletic Director search.

Tennessee football’s search for an athletic director drew some comments from an unexpected but familiar source on Monday.

Duke football coach David Cutcliffe, who served as an assistant coach for the Vols from 1982 to 1998 and then in 2007 and 2008, serving as offensive coordinator all of those years after 1992, gave his take on the situation.

Speaking with Saturday Down South, Cutcliffe said he has no idea what is happening with the Vols’ Athletic Director search, but given his relationship with Phillip Fulmer and the fact that Fulmer is a candidate for the job, it’s easy to see why his take would be interesting.

Cutcliffe said he has not been involved in the process but spoke highly of his former boss, calling Fulmer a “natural leader.”

Many Tennessee football fans probably wish they had Cutcliffe as a head coach right now. They didn’t go after him any of the three times in their previous openings, but he would have clearly done a great job, even if he reminded fans too much of Fulmer.

Considering what he’s done at Duke, he has alleviated all concerns people had about him given the job he did with the Ole Miss Rebels.

He has been able to recruit well above the standard of Duke football in Durham.

And he has clearly been able to win in ways far beyond what anybody would have expected. So having him as a head coach anywhere would be great for that team.

Meanwhile, his take on anything regarding Tennessee football is valuable. He is clearly a smart guy. He also seems to still have a special place in his heart for Tennessee football.
