Stephen Griffin leaving the Tennessee Vols, the first spring practice, and baseball and softball lead the Volunteers news for Wednesday, March 22, 2017.

Spring is here, but the cold just won’t go away! And the Tennessee Vols are all in with their spring sports along with prep for next year’s football season.

As we get set to bring you the news on Rocky Top for today, the recap of the football team taking the field Tuesday is obviously going to be the lead news.

But there is also a football departure to address. And there are two big midweek games to preview for tonight as well.

So we have plenty of news to get to.

Let’s start with the first spring practice.

Experts’ observations on Tennessee Vols first spring practice – GoVols247

Tennessee football held its first spring practice on Tuesday. The Vols took the field with a new staff, an impending quarterback battle, and lots of key players to find replacements for.

"The Tennessee football team opened spring camp Tuesday afternoon, and the GoVols247 staff was on Haslam Field to check out some of the action. Here are some quick observations from Wes Rucker, Ryan Callahan and Grant Ramey."

Safety Stephen Griffin leaving the Vols – Rhiannon Potkey, Knoxville News Sentinel

Tennessee Vols junior defensive back is no longer part of the Tennessee football program, according to a UT spokesperson. At one point, Griffin was in contention with Micah Abernathy and Evan Berry to start at free safety last year. However, with him likely to be buried in the depth chart, this was probably a smart decision.

"Griffin appeared in 19 games the last two seasons for the Vols, making 18 total tackles. The Charlotte, N.C., native made his first and only career start last season in the regular-season ending loss to Vanderbilt."

"The Tennessee Volunteers host the Marshall Thundering Herd for a midweek matchup for the first time since 2010 on Wednesday, March 22 at 6 p.m. ET at Lindsey Nelson Stadium."

Tennessee softball to host North Carolina – UTSports

The Tennessee Vols softball program dropped two of three in a series to the Arkansas Razorbacks over the weekend. However, they did win the final game. And now, they have a chance to get back on track in a home game against another Top 25 team.

"No. 19 Tennessee begins a 10-game homestand on Wednesday night when No. 25 North Carolina visits Sherri Parker Lee Stadium for a non-conference midweek battle. The Vols enter Wednesday’s matchup following a 5-1 win over No. 25 Arkansas on Sunday to close out their series against the Razorbacks. UT is 19-2 in non-conference play this season and 8-1 at home this year."
