The rising stock of Joshua Dobbs, a Lady Tennessee Vols recruit’s major award, and spring updates lead the Volunteers news for Thursday, April 6, 2017.

The weekend is right around the corner, and Tennessee Vols fans can only think about football practice in the spring right now.

Hey, that’s what you do on Rocky Top.

As we get set to bring you the news for today, it mostly revolves around the Tennessee football program.

But there is one bit of news surrounding the Tennessee Lady Vols and a major award for one of their recruits next year. We’ll get to that as well.

Let’s start with a former Vol, though, not an incoming Vol. And it goes back to football.

Joshua Dobbs could be drafted in the second or third round – Grant Ramey, GoVols247

He was working just to make sure he could be taken in the NFL Draft a few months ago. Now, Josh Dobbs’s draft stock has been rising dramatically ever since the Senior Bowl. And the NFL has taken serious notice.

"The NFL Draft stock of Joshua Dobbs could hinge on one question: How good was his supporting cast at Tennessee?ESPN NFL Draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. on Wednesday compared the situation surrounding Dobbs — one that has included surging draft stock since the Senior Bowl in January — to that of Notre Dame quarterback DeShone Kizer."

Lady Vols recruit tops All-USA team – UTSports

Three Tennessee Lady Vols recruits made All-USA teams: Evina Westbrook, Rennia Davis, and Anastasia Hayes. This spells good news for Holly Warlick, who desperately needs this recruiting class for next year. Westbrook was the star, though, as she was named All-USA Player of the year.

"Westbrook, a 6-foot guard from Salem, Ore. (South Salem H.S.), was a member of the five-player first team along with Anastasia Hayes, a 5-7 guard from Murfreesboro, Tenn. (Riverdale H.S.).Averaging 24.8 points, 7.5 rebounds, 5.8 assists, 5.1 steals and 1.4 blocks per contest, Westbrook led her high school team to a third-place finish in the Oregon 6A state tournament."

Tennessee football defense regrouping in spring – Associated Press

The Tennessee football defense had some major stars last year, such as Derek Barnett, that they have to replace this season. Making it worse, the defense already struggled with those stars. So they have been trying to regroup this spring.

"Tennessee allowed 37.1 points per game in its final seven matchups against Football Bowl Subdivision teams last year as the Volunteers split their last eight contests after a 5-0 start . The Vols have revamped their defensive coaching staff in an effort to avoid a repeat performance.“That’s our motivation,” linebacker Cortez McDowell said. “We went back and looked at all the explosive plays we’ve given up the past season and found ways to correct it through communication or however it might be.”"
