Tennessee softball had an amazing win on Sunday thanks to a walk-off grand slam. The No. 8 ranked Volunteers defeated the Gators 5-1.
Ralph and Karen Weekly’s team had enjoyed an amazing 20-game winning streak up until a loss on the road to the No. 16 ranked LSU Tigers last Sunday. That started, a three-game losing streak for Tennessee softball, as it carried over to two straight losses to the No. 1 ranked Florida Gators this weekend.
But while their 20-game winning streak was epic, the way they got their next win after it ended was also epic.
The Vols avoided a sweep at the hands of the Gators thanks to a grand slam from Megan Greer in the fifth inning with the team trailing 1-0. It was the first runs any SEC team had scored on the Gators in 47 innings.
That grand slam was the difference in the game, as Tennessee softball won 5-1. With the win, they move to 42-8 on the year and 14-6 in the SEC, while Florida falls to 46-4 and 20-3 in the SEC.
This game was historic for multiple reasons.
For starters, it’s always historic when you defeat the No. 1 team in the country. But it was also about a Tennessee softball attendance record.
The crowd of 2,239 at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium Sunday was the largest crowd ever to witness a Tennessee softball home game.
So to knock of the No. 1 team in the country in front of a record crowd is pretty impressive.
Of course, in the grand scheme of things, the Vols still lost the series as the Gators took two out of three.
But by snapping a losing streak along with all the other things we mentioned, they still had a lot to celebrate on Sunday.
And they also snapped the Gators’ historic streak of pitching scoreless innings. So it was a great win all the way around.
