Dave Serrano stepping down, Tennessee Vols baseball missing out on the SEC Tournament, and Joshua Dobbs lead the Volunteers news for Friday, May 19, 2017.
Happy Friday to everybody! As sweltering heat grips the eastern portion of the country, the Tennessee Vols continue to wind down their athletic year.
And the news on Rocky Top for today has more of a focus on one sport than others, and it’s not usually a sport that leads the day.
But there were two endings to the Tennessee baseball program that we have to immediately address. And one of them comes first.
So we start with it.
Dave Serrano to resign at the end of the season – Mike Strange, Knoxville News Sentinel
Tennessee Vols baseball coach Dave Serrano was hired in 2011 to replace Todd Raleigh. However, he never matched the success he had at his other stops before coming to Knoxville, and now his tenure is set to come to an end.
"The resume was about as good as any coach Tennessee ever hired in any sport. He had taken two different California schools to the College World Series and had Tennessee ties to boot. But the West Coast magic never followed Serrano to Tennessee. UT announced his resignation as head baseball coach Wednesday, pending the imminent end of his sixth season coaching the Vols."
NFL GM rips Josh Dobbs – Matt Schoch, SEC Country
Addressing the questions as to why he fell in the NFL Draft, an NFL general manager said that former Tennessee Vols quarterback Joshua Dobbs fell because he wasn’t any good on Saturdays.
"A National Football League general manager was granted that anonymity by Matt Miller of Bleacher Report, who issued a scouting notebook on Thursday ripping on Dobbs and former Pittsburgh quarterback Nate Peterman."
Tennessee baseball eliminated from SEC Tournament – Wes Rucker, GoVols247
The Tennessee Vols fell to the Missouri Tigers on Thursday, ending any hopes they have of postseason play this year. The loss eliminated them from the SEC Tournament.
"Tennessee needed to sweep Missouri this weekend to qualify for next week’s SEC Tournament. But things didn’t go that way.Missouri shut out the Vols in Thursday’s series opener at Lindsey Nelson Stadium, which means Tennessee’s season has just two more games — Friday and Saturday games against the Tigers."
