While Volunteers basketball was facing the Kansas Jayhawks, Tennessee football received a commitment from a 2021 North Carolina defensive tackle.

They aren’t even done with this year’s recruiting class yet. But Tennessee football is still making moves ahead of next year’s class, and the Vols got a solid boost on that front Saturday evening while their basketball team was in the midst of a close loss at the No. 3 ranked Kansas Jayhawks.

Isaac Washington, a defensive tackle out of East Surry High School out of Pilot Mountain, N.C., became the fifth commitment to the Vols’ 2021 recruiting class. He is also their first defensive lineman to commit.

Currently a three-star on Rivals with plenty of room to improve his ratings, Washington right now stands at 6’3″ 265 pounds. He made his decision on the Vols’ Junior Day announced his commitment to Tennessee football on Twitter.

In a roundabout way, you could look at Washington’s rating as a positive given his size. If he can already generate a three-star status despite only being 265 pounds at defensive tackle, then he has a lot of potential by simply putting on more weight. That would almost certainly improve his rating as well.

Washington is currently ranked the No. 29 player at his position nationally and the No. 21 player in the state of North Carolina. But again, there is plenty of room for that to improve. Here is a look at his highlight reel.

As you can see, Washington is good with leverage and positioning. His biggest skill is being able to wrap people up once he makes contact with them. Athleticism and quickness could be a bit of a concern, but that won’t matter as much as long as he puts on size.

Before Washington, Tennessee football’s four commitments involved two defensive backs, a wide receiver and an athlete who could play defensive back or wide receiver. So they’ve been all skill players. Two were from Alabama, one was from Tennessee and one was Virginia. So Washington is unique on his location and position. But he’s a solid addition.
