SEC Changes Baseball Tournament
By Mark Shrum
The SEC has announced that they have made changes to their yearly baseball tournament. The key change is the expansion of the tournament field from eight to 10 teams. The division champions get the top two seeds in the tournament and first round byes, and teams 3-10 are ranked according to conference winning percentage.
The tournament will stay in Hoover, Ala. Regions Park will host the 2012 SEC Tournament from May 22-27. Games from Tuesday (the first day of games) to Friday will be double-elimination, and Saturday on will be single-elimination.
The good news for Tennessee fans in this? More chances to get into the post-season! With two new spots opening up, Tennessee baseball can afford a misstep or two and could still make the SEC Tourney. Once there they could piece together a run and make it to the NCAA Tournament.
All of this of course could be avoided if Tennessee plays well under Dave Serrano, which isn’t a terribly hard thing to imagine, but, with the SEC going to the last 4 College World Series championships and winning three consecutive, the competition is definitely fierce.
