UT Baseball: Vols Win Opener, Serrano Gets First Win

The Dave Serrano era of UT Baseball began with a 7-1 victory over the Northern Illinois Huskies Friday.

The Vols took advantage of spotty pitching in the first inning to put two runs on the board early and never looked back. Pierce and Steckenrider hit home runs, and Steckenrider got the win.

Serrano becomes the 14th head coach in Tennessee history to win his debut.

The Vols will play a double header on Saturday to finish the series starting at noon.

“I’ve been in a lot of openers,” Serrano said, “This is my eight one, third one at a different program. I was most excited about this one. I just told the players in there, a lot of this has to do with them. This win was special for them.”
