Tennessee Volunteers Football: Ranking The Vol Traditions
By Zach Ragan
3. Vol Navy
Fans have been gathering in the Tennessee river (which borders Neyland Stadium) to “sail-gate”since the 1960’s.
The tradition’s origins are traced back to 1962, when broadcaster George Mooney would travel the Tennessee river to Neyland, in order to beat the traffic in Knoxville. Fans began to notice, and the rest is history.
The Vol Navy is this high on the list, because it’s a tradition that is unique to the University of Tennessee. Washington is the only other school that has a football stadium border water.
The Vol Navy is a spectacle that every football fan should experience at least once, seeing 200 boats adorned with Tennessee flags, floating alongside one the biggest stadiums in the nation, is not something you’ll soon forget.
