Vols Fall Camp: Practice #6 Quick Notes

Day six of Tennessee’s fall camp was the second day in full pads. Certain players are showing why they belong and some are still trying to assert themselves. The main thing to take away from today’s practice was intensity and energy. These are things Butch Jones preaches on a daily basis and it came out in some of the competitive drills.

  • During the Wide Receivers and Cornerbacks blocking drill, there was more than enough enthusiasm to go around. Jason Croom was a man among boys during his reps.  His imposing figure allowed him to bully the corners. Vincent Dallas had a very solid showing as well. Overall, the Cornerback’s won 12-11 in a drill that came down to the very last rep.
  • Curt Maggitt, LaDarrell McNeil, and Christian Harris practiced in the green jerseys today. Maggitt continues to progress and looked agile and explosive.
  • Linebackers Dontavis Sapp, AJ Johnson, and Brent Brewer stood out during drills. Sapp and Brewer exhibited good speed, while Johnson is very powerful.
  • LaTroy Lewis and Jordan Williams stood out at the Defensive End position during drills, as both looked explosive and got to their spots quickly.
  • During punt return drills, Pig Howard, Cam Sutton, and Devrin Young got in work.  Even under pressure, there was very little cause for concern.  Howard has improved over the past several days, as he looks more comfortable.  The experienced Young went through the drills with ease.
  • Wide Receiver Jonathon Johnson really stood out today on slant route drills.  His quickness and crispness was impressive.
