Punters get paid too.
That’s a slight alteration of Rich Eisen’s famous “Punters are people too” slogan, but it’s appropriate in this instance.
Former Tennessee Volunteer Britton Colquitt, a Vol legacy, signed a three-year contract extension with the Denver Broncos on Sunday.
The new contract is worth $13 million according to USA Today.
Britton is one of four Colquitts to punt for the University of Tennessee. His father Craig, his uncle Jimmy and brother Dustin all punted for the Vols before Britton.
The youngest Colquitt went undrafted in 2009, but was quickly signed by the Denver Broncos.
Colquitt was waived by the Broncos, then after a short stint with the Miami Dolphins he resigned with Denver. He took over punting duties in 2010 and has been the Broncos’ punter since.
The former first team All-SEC punter has the fifth most single-season punting yards in NFL history with 4,783 (2011).
Colquitt’s average annual salary of $3.9 million now makes him the highest paid punter in the NFL, according to The Denver Post.
Who did he unseat to become the highest paid punter?
That would be big brother Dustin.
At least it’s staying in the family.
