Coaches work hard to build up depth on both sides of the ball, but in one swift move that depth can vanish.
That’s what the Vols are being faced with as they enter the “dog days” of fall camp.
On Monday we learned that junior wide receiver Vincent Dallas would be moving over to defense, in order to play at the cornerback position. This switch is likely directly related to the injury of junior defensive back Riyahd Jones.
All that is known currently is that Jones is suffering from a knee injury.
Jones has been seen at practice on crutches, unable to put any weight on his injured knee.
Butch Jones didn’t elaborate on the extent of Riyahd’s injury after practice on Tuesday.
"Riyahd Jones has had a leg injury and he’s still undergoing further evaluation. We’ll know more as time progresses, but that’s all we’ll say on that."
It doesn’t take a football genius to realize that if the coaching staff expected Jones back soon, then they wouldn’t be making sudden position changes.
In addition to Vincent Dallas moving to the defensive side of the ball, the Vols also moved senior running back Reggie Juin to defensive back.
The Vols have the depth at both running back and wide receiver that allows them to make these moves, without hurting themselves elsewhere.
While we don’t know the extent of Riyahd Jones knee injury, it doesn’t look good for the junior college transfer. It’s a tough break for Jones, who was a early enrollee back in the spring.
Hopefully for the Vols, and more importantly Jones, the Georgia native will be able to make a quick and speedy recovery.
