The Tennessee Volunteers got off to a quick start against the Austin Peay Governors on Saturday, scoring on the fourth play of their opening drive.
Senior running back Rajion Neal took the handoff from Justin Worley 47 yards for the score. Neal finished with 141 rushing yards on the day.
As impressive as the play was, that wasn’t our “play of the game”.
That honor is reserved for senior defensive tackle Daniel Hood.
The Knoxville native made sure the Vols got the ball back quickly after Neal’s long touchdown run.
On the Governors second play after Neal’s touchdown, Hood found himself in the passing lane and was able to tip the pass from Governors’ quarterback Andrew Spivey. Hood kept his eye on the ball and came down with the interception.
Had it not been for Spivey being “johnny-on-the-spot” and making the tackle, Hood may have returned the interception for his first career touchdown.
Both plays were equally impressive, but we have to give the play of the game honors to Hood, for making two great efforts on the play.
