Former Tennessee Volunteer Dallas Thomas spent most of training camp trying to figure out what position on the offensive line he’d be playing this season.
Thomas is listed as the backup to left guard Richie Incognito on the team’s 53 man roster, but things aren’t that simple for the rookie. Thomas played all-over the offensive line during training camp, something the Dolphins love about him. The Dolphins don’t list a backup at right guard, which presumably means that Thomas will be considered the backup to John Jerry as well.
Just because he’s listed as a left-guard doesn’t necessarily mean that’s where the Dolphins see him in their long-term plans.
As a rookie, Thomas will provide the Dolphins with a lot of versatility, but he could end up being a long-term solution at left tackle.
Left tackle Jonathan Martin has been less than stellar for the Dolphins this summer, meaning his time could be short as the starter in Miami.
Thomas played left tackle at Tennessee, before being shifted to guard in 2012 to make room for Antonio “Tiny” Richardson. Some scouts considered Thomas too slow to play left tackle in the NFL, while others cited his quickness as a strength.
Regardless of where Thomas ends up playing, his versatility will come in handy for a Miami team hoping to make a playoff push this season.
