CBS Sports has ranked all 126 FBS teams.
The top 25 contains few surprises. Alabama finds themselves at number one, followed by Oregon. Stanford, Ohio State and Clemson round out the top five.
The Tennessee Volunteers are ranked about where you’d expect them to be — 56th.
The Vols haven’t done much to warrant a ranking higher than 56th. After beating an FCS opponent (Austin Peay) and a less-talented Western Kentucky team, the Vols have dropped two straight games to Oregon and Florida.
In Tennessee’s defense, those were road games.
Against Florida, the Volunteers showed a defense that’s worthy of a top 30 ranking, but the offense looked like that of a team that would be ranked on the lower third of this list.
Some other notable teams ranked low on the list are:
- Texas — 47
- Cincinnati — 53
- West Virginia — 64
- Kentucky — 81
- South Alabama — 99 (Vols next opponent)
- Western Kentucky — 101 (Vols defeated WKU 52-20 in week 2)
