Rating recruits can be a tricky business.

The seemingly all-important star ratings often generate more debate than a player’s actual skills.

Some folks put way more emphasis on how many stars a player has, than others do. I happen to fall among those who don’t place a supreme importance on it.

However, it is a good gauge of where a recruiting class stands.

On Monday, Vol commit Jerome Dews received an additional star (247Sports), bumping him up to a three-star recruit.

Dews, from Oxon Hill, MD (Potomac), committed to Tennessee on June 24.

The 6’3″/200 lb linebacker doesn’t have a very impressive list of offers, but that will likely be changing soon.

Butch Jones and the Volunteers saw something they liked in this kid and went after him early. That should help them retain his commitment when signing day comes around in February.

The Vols’ 2014 recruiting class is currently ranked fourth in the nation.
