Vols Football: Thursday Spring Practice Notes

The theme of Thursday’s practice was “Tough Thursday,” and it lived up to its billing as the coaches cracked down on players and one-on-one drills were just as intense as ever. Even the weather contributed to the toughness, as the wind swirled and the sun beat down on everyone in attendance. Here is what stood out on the Vols’ 10th spring practice of 2014:

  • The practice began with several one-on-one drills pitting offensive linemen against defensive linemen. Defensive end/tackle Dimarya Mixon was the most notable individual during this period, taking on 3 different linemen in a row and winning his battles.
  • After the linemen faced each other in one-on-one drills, it was time for the receivers and defensive backs. Notable match-ups included Cam Sutton vs. Josh Malone and Marquez North vs. Emmanuel Moseley.
  • Emmanuel Moseley continues to impress on the practice field. In his match-up with North, he timed his jump perfectly and prevented the sophomore receiver from making one of his famous incredible catches. The 5-11 freshman has stood out so far this spring, and he could well be on his way to earning a starting spot alongside Cam Sutton.
  • Neiko Creamer saw time at both linebacker and running back in today’s practice, lining up in a goal-line situation at linebacker and practicing individual drills with the other running backs. The 3-star athlete has yet to find a set place on the team, but he is playing well at any position being asked of him.
  • Corey Vereen showed more confidence and impressive ability during practice today, standing up to a challenge by offensive lineman Dontavius Blair for a one-on-one session and winning it. He then took on two other linemen for a one-on-one drill and won each time.
  • Vols coaches are still trying out a committee at punt returner, and we saw several players field punts today. Devrin Young, Josh Malone, Cam Sutton, Marquez North, and Johnathon Johnson all fielded punts. Young’s previous experience seems to be separating him, as he looked the most comfortable and consistent.
  • Jalen Hurd is still a physical specimen to behold, but his technique could still use some work. In the running back drills, running backs coach Robert Gillespie repeatedly mentored the young running back and drew attention to his footwork and toughness.
  • Sophomore running back Alden Hill looked impressive today, just as he did all during spring practices last season. He displayed good toughness and a good burst of speed in all the running back drills.
  • None of the above points have been dedicated to the QB’s because there still has been no separation among the quarterbacks to this point. All 4 took the same amount of reps in the drills, and all performed as well as one can in non-contact drills.

The next practice for the Vols will take place Saturday morning, and the students from the University of Tennessee are being welcomed to attend the practice for free.
