Heading into this Saturday’s scrimmage, the consensus around campus was that the QB battle was down to two men: Senior Justin Worley and redshirt freshman Riley Ferguson.

Well, the race is back to anyone’s game now.

Joshua Dobbs, the sophomore who started the final 4 games of the season as a freshman last year, exploded after a somewhat quiet spring. He threw the ball effectively, and he showed once again why he’s a dual-threat QB with some athletic runs as well.

Dobbs finished the day completing 6 of 9 passes for 199 yards and 3 TD’s, chipping in 59 yards and a score on the ground.

Dobbs’ 59 yards all came on one play, a play that might seem more fitting if it were accompanied by carnival music rather than the hip-hop pouring through the speakers for much of Saturday’s scrimmage.

The snap from center was errant, and Dobbs picked up the football off the turf and looked for any lane he could find. A couple of broken tackles and juke moves later, and Dobbs was celebrating in the end zone.

While it would’ve been nice to have the QB competition narrowed down to just two guys heading into the fall, Dobb’s explosion is still great news for an offense that will need an adept QB who can make plays both in the air and on the ground.
