D.J. Matthews, a 2017 wide receiver from Jacksonville, FL (First Coast), was offered by Tennessee on Wednesday.
Matthews, who will be a high school sophomore this fall, has not been rated yet by the major recruiting services.
The 6’0″/160 lb Florida native currently holds offers from Clemson, Florida State, Louisville, LSU, Miami, North Carolina, Ole Miss and South Carolina, in addition to his offer from the Vols.
Matthews is clearly the type of wide receiver that Butch Jones and Tennessee loves. He goes up and gets the ball at it’s highest point, instead of waiting on the ball to get to him. He also has good speed and good field awareness. Matthews, for a freshman, is a very impressive athlete.
Unfortunately for Tennessee, it’s unlikely that they’ll be able to make a serious run at Matthews. Florida State is a serious player here and pulling Matthews out of the state of Florida might not be possible.
But then again, Butch Jones has never backed down from a challenge. I’m sure D.J. Matthews won’t be any different.
