Undrafted free agent Dontavis Sapp is quickly moving up the Dallas Cowboys’ depth chart, according to beat writer Brandon George.
Sapp’s ascent up the depth chart (even though it might be temporary) is mainly due to the knee injury of MLB Sean Lee, which will keep the incumbent starter out for the entire 2014 season.
The Cowboys are quickly trying to find a replacement for Lee and it doesn’t look like Bruce Carter, who previously filled in at MLB for Dallas, is in the mix.
Justin Durant has been working as the team’s first-team MLB during OTA’s, with a mixture of options, including Sapp, working with the second and third teams.
Sapp won’t be a threat to win the starting job out of camp by any means, but he does look to have a decent shot at making the team. Something that’s never guaranteed for an undrafted free agent.
The former Vol has made a good impression so far and his vocal leadership has already been noticed.
If you’re at all familiar with Dontavis Sapp, then that shouldn’t come as a surprise. It’s something that Butch Jones pointed out several times while Sapp was at Tennessee.
If Sapp keeps this up, there could be some teams that regret passing on the former Tennessee Volunteer.
