Linebacker Jerome Dews announced on Monday evening that he is no longer committed to the Tennessee Volunteers.
There was quite a bit of confusion surrounding Dews on National Signing Day. The Oxon Hill, MD native tweeted the night before NSD that he would be attending a prep school this fall, before enrolling at Tennessee, presumably, in January, 2015.
The three-star linebacker also tweeted, on the same night, that he would still be “signing” on NSD, which obviously wasn’t the case.
This isn’t really a huge loss for the Vols, as there’s no guarantee that he would’ve even ended up on campus next spring anyway.
The Vols had a strong 2014 recruiting class, full of talented linebackers. Butch Jones could definitely use the added depth and athleticism at the linebacker position, but Tennessee already has much better depth at the position than they did a year ago.
There have been very few negatives for the Vols in the recruiting world since Jones came to Rocky Top.
Losing Dews is not a loss that should make Vol fans lose any faith in Jones. That’s just how recruiting goes sometimes.
