The Vols will head to Norman, OK next Saturday with a 2-0 record, but there are still a lot of unanswered questions surrounding team 118.
Tennessee didn’t look their best against Arkansas State, but they were able to grind out a victory.
Here some notes and things you should know from Saturday’s action:
- Justin Worley’s 247 passing yards were the third most of his career.
- Brett Kendrick started at left tackle over Dontavius Blair.
- Todd Kelly JR got the first start of his career at strong safety, over Devaun Swofford.
- Curt Maggitt started at defensive end.
- LaDarrell McNeil started at free safety due to Brian Randolph being “nicked up” from the Utah State game. Randolph would’ve been available in an “emergency”.
- Jalen Hurd’s four-yard touchdown run was the first rushing touchdown of his career. He has two total touchdowns in two games.
- Justin Worley’s five-yard touchdown run was also his first career rushing touchdown.
- Marquez North’s two touchdowns on Saturday were more than he had all of last season (he had one in 2013 against Georgia).
- True freshman Jakob Johnson made his Tennessee debut on Saturday, playing on special teams.
- Vols play ratio: 38 passes to 45 rushes.
- AJ Johnson led the team in tackles with nine.
- Tennessee had three sacks: Owen Williams had two and Jalen Reeves-Maybin had one.
- Tennessee out-gained Arkansas State 415 yards to 331 yards.
- Butch Jones couldn’t provide an injury update for either Ethan Wolf or Von Pearson. He said he’d know more by Saturday night or Sunday.
- Jones said the media needs to quit looking into how the running back carries are split between Hurd and Marlin Lane. Hurd received 23 carries to Lane’s 13 carries.
