Vols Rank 5th In USA Today Fan Index

The Tennessee Volunteers’ large college football fanbase is the fifth best in the nation, according to USA Today’s “fan index”.

The index takes into account weekly voting, which is based on a particular theme.

The theme this past week was tailgating. Tennessee came in fifth in the poll, which is calculated through voting and social media interaction.

Here’s how USA Today explains the rankings:

"The College Football Fan Index presented by Degree® is an in-depth ranking of the top college football fan bases as determined through social chatter aggregation and online fan voting across weekly editorial fan-driven themes. The index, launched prior to this season, is measured based on the social activity of each school’s fan base, as well as the voting results of weekly themed polls that ask fans to determine which schools offer the best fan experience."

The index is updated each Thursday. Results from the entire season will be averaged and on December 11 the nation’s best fanbase will be revealed.

The theme this week is best colors. You can vote here.

Upcoming themes include best stadium, best helmets, best entrances etc.

The Vols are known for having some of the most active fans on social media. I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see the Big Orange fanbase compete for title of “Best Fanbase in College Football”.
