When the Vols and Georgia get together, you can count on one thing — a close game.
Unfortunately for the Vols, those close games continue to go Georgia’s way.
Tennessee gave a valiant effort on Saturday and proved they are good enough to beat a team like Georgia, but they eventually lost 35-32
Good enough, however, doesn’t get wins and at this point there are no moral victories for Tennessee.
The Vols were ultimately undone by a injury that caused Justin Worley to miss a significant portion of the second half.
Backup Nathan Peterman was forced into action and was unable to lead the Vols to a score. Tennessee’s defense held Georgia several times, but Georgia running back Todd Gurley ultimately prevailed.
Here are a few quick thoughts from the game:
- Justin Worley is a lot better than anyone thought. He made several great throws on Saturday afternoon and kept the Vols in the game.
- Tennessee’s run game looked a lot better. Jalen Hurd, who ran for 119 yards, is clearly the best runner on the team and has outplayed Marlin Lane all season.
- The Vols’ defense stepped up in the second half, but Georgia is one of the best rushing teams in the nation. You can only stop a player like Todd Gurley so much.
- AJ Johnson had probably his worst game of the season.
- Todd Kelly, Cam Sutton and Jalen Reeves-Maybin were the defensive MVPs for Tennessee on Saturday.
- The Vols really missed Ethan Wolf. He brings a different element to the passing game.
- Offensive line looked much better than they did against Oklahoma. However, they still have a long way to go.
- Jason Croom played his best game of the season. He finished with four catches for 60 yards and a touchdown.
- Georgia only outgained Tennessee by 35 yards. The Vols’ offense, with Worley under center, looked better than Georgia’s.
- The Vols are in trouble if Worley sustains a long-term injury. The gap between him and the backups is HUGE.
