If you’re wondering why Vols sophomore quarterback Josh Dobbs didn’t come into the game against Georgia when Justin Worley was injured, it’s because Butch Jones hopes to redshirt him.
Jones is obviously looking toward the future with this move. The quarterback position will once again be the biggest story of the off-season when next year rolls around.
Worley will be gone and it will leave just Nathan Peterman and Josh Dobbs as quarterbacks with game experience on the roster.
Tennessee will be bringing in 2015 recruits Quinten Dormady and Jauan Jennings, to go along with Peterman and Dobbs.
While most folks assume that Dormady will be “the answer” (which is a very good possibility), it’s still a lot to ask of a true freshman to go out and win the starting job.
It could very well end up being Josh Dobbs that is under center next year for the Vols.
Dobbs played in five games as a true freshman and started four of those contests. He threw for 695 yards and rushed for 189.
There were times when Dobbs looked very much like a freshman, but also times where his talent was able to shine through.
The thought of Dobbs starting probably doesn’t bring joy to a lot of Vol fans, but neither did the thought of Worley starting.
Now it’s hard to imagine anyone but Worley leading this team. I’m not saying it will be the same case with Dobbs next season (if this all even turns out to be the case), but it’s worth staying off the panic button for the time being.
