Vols Football: Devrin Young Has Broken Ribs
By Zach Ragan
The Tennessee Volunteers won their first game since September 6 on Saturday, but it didn’t happen without a few casualties.
Among those casualties was senior running back/return man Devrin Young.
According to head coach Butch Jones, Young suffered a “couple of broken ribs”.
"Jones: “The only thing I’ve heard now is that Devrin Young has a couple of broken ribs. I’ll have to get clarification on that.”"
Young, who missed five games last season due to a broken hand, moved back to running back this season after bouncing back and forth between wide receiver and running back the past couple of seasons.
In six games this year, Young has six carries for 24 yards. He also has four catches for 31 yards.
I would be very surprised if Young didn’t miss some time with this injury. Broken ribs are an injury that can linger and there’s no remedy except rest.
Young had been working as the Vols’ third running back this season. I’d expect to see increased reps for true freshman Derrell Scott, who saw his first game action of the season on Saturday.
Scott was actually the Volunteers’ leading rusher on Saturday, carrying the ball nine times for 46 yards. He saw plenty of action with Marlin Lane not in the lineup and Jalen Hurd removed for precautionary reasons.
As far as kick-return duties go, perhaps we’ll see more Evan Berry after his big return on Saturday?
It would certainly be the right move for the Vols.
