South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Steve Spurrier confirmed on Wednesday that his team will wear alternate black uniforms against the Tennessee Vols this weekend.
This will immediately cause fans to recall the 2009 meeting between South Carolina and Tennessee. The Vols warmed up in their orange uniforms, before storming through the T in black uniforms for their Halloween matchup against the Gamecocks.
The Lane Kiffin led Vols easily beat South Carolina that night, 31-13.
As far as South Carolina’s success wearing black uniforms? Well it’s not good.
Since 2009, the Gamecocks have donned black uniforms six times. They’re 1-5 in those games.
The last time South Carolina wore black uniforms was in 2011 against Auburn. The Gamecocks lost that game.
South Carolina’s lone victory in black uniforms came in 2009 against NC State.
We all know that uniforms don’t win football games, but it’s good news for the Vols that history is at least on their side.
