Tennessee Vols wide receiver Josh Smith will have season ending surgery on his ankle this week, according to multiple reports.
Smith injured his ankle in Tennessee’s loss to Oklahoma on September 13.
Before the injury, Smith was emerging as one of the Vols’ top options in the passing game. The sophomore from Knoxville had 10 catches for 135 yards and a touchdown in three games this season. He was on pace to easily surpass his totals from his freshman season (12 catches, 182 yards and a touchdown).
Tennessee’s wide receiver depth is suffering a bit at the moment. Von Pearson still isn’t 100% and Marquez North is dealing with a shoulder injury that kept him from being effective against South Carolina.
If there’s a silver lining, it’s that Tennessee will (hopefully) get an extra year from Josh Smith. His steady hands and crisp route running will be needed as the Volunteers load up for a 2015 run at the SEC East crown.
