According to FootballScoop.com, the Michigan Wolverines reached out to Vols head coach Butch Jones about their soon-to-be vacant head coach position.
The report says that Jones will not be a candidate for the job.
"Sources tell us that Michigan has reached out to Butch Jones as well. Jones will not be a candidate at Michigan."
We all knew that Michigan would eventually reach out to Jones. They really didn’t have a choice.
Jones has recruited well at Tennessee, the program is improving and he’s proved he can successfully be the face of a major collegiate program. He also happens to be from Michigan.
The Wolverines had to do their due diligence, even though Jones has made it quite clear that he’s “in it for the long haul” at Tennessee.
Considering the improvements that have been made with Jones at the helm (plus the fact that a program like Michigan is at least interested), the Vols would be wise to make sure they don’t under-compensate Jones and let him get away.
It’s still a bit early to be talking about raises (Tennessee could still finish with their fifth straight losing season), but if the Vols show marked improvement next season, Dave Hart better open the checkbook.
