Van Jefferson Delays Enrollment; What Does It Mean For Vols?

2015 four-star wide receiver Van Jefferson, a Georgia commit since last August, was suppose to be an early enrollee in Athens, but reports on Tuesday have indicated that is no longer the case.

Jefferson, a native of Brentwood, TN (Ravenwood), is still committed to Georgia, but will take official visits before making his final decision, according to a report from 247Sports. Those visits are likely to include Florida, Oklahoma and Texas.

The 6’2″/180″ lb receiver took an unofficial visit to Tennessee last summer, but he didn’t make it to Knoxville this fall for a game. The only visit Jefferson made during the season was to Georgia on August 30. He did, however, take a official visit to Georgia on December 12 and a official visit to Ole Miss on December 14.

This is certainly an interesting development, though the report from 247Sports suggests it might be related more to academics than it is on Jefferson wavering from his commitment to the Bulldogs.

But it does leave the door open for the Vols and the other mentioned schools. It’s unclear how interested Jefferson is in UT, though I’d expect the Vols to be a factor, simply because of proximity.

Tennessee already has a commitment from 2015 wide receiver Preston Williams and they’re going hard after Texas native Ryan Newsome.

I’m not sure the Vols, with plenty of other positions that need attention, will be willing to take more wide receivers. Of course at the same time, they would be crazy to pass on Van Jefferson, if given the opportunity.

Jefferson is the type of player that you somehow have to fit in your class, if you get the chance to sign him. There’s no such thing as a “can’t-miss-prospect”, but Jefferson is certainly a guy that has a ton of potential.

Keep an eye on this recruiting battle. It could get interesting as signing day rapidly approaches.
