Vol Target Sets Announcement Date

2015 four-star wide receiver Ryan Newsome tweeted on Tuesday evening that he will be announcing his college decision on January 23, shortly before National Signing Day.

Newsome, a 5’8″/170 lb receiver from Aledo, TX (Aledo), is one of the Vols’ top remaining 2015 targets.

247Sports rates Newsome as the 33rd best 2015 player in the state of Texas and the 29th best 2015 wide receiver in the nation.

The Vols are battling Texas, Oklahoma, Baylor and Ole Miss, among others, for Newsome’s commitment.

Tennessee is currently loaded at wide receiver, with everyone from 2014 on their way back to Knoxville next season.

But as we saw this past season, staying healthy can be an issue. Depth can always be an issue once the injuries start mounting.

Newsome, on top of being a highly touted recruit, would fit perfectly into Butch Jones’ offense. You saw how Pig Howard evolved as the season went along. That’s how Newsome would be used in the Volunteers’ offense.

The consensus seems to be that Texas will land Newsome, but the Vols are very much in this one. It wouldn’t be a shock to see Newsome don a lighter shade of orange on January 23 when he makes his decision.
