When you extend a scholarship offer to a punter, the expectation is that they’re coming to be to the guy.
And the opportunity is certainly there for Tommy Townsend to be the guy.
With Matt Darr moving on, the job is up for grabs. There’s no true heir apparent already on the roster, so Townsend has just as good of a chance as Ryan Ault or Trevor Daniel to be the Vols’ punter in 2015.
Having a good punter is a huge deal. If you can’t win the field position game, then it’s very likely you’ll drop some of those close games that come down to a couple of points.
