Sheriron Jones, Quarterback

The Vols brought in three quarterbacks in their 2015 recruiting class, and two of them, Quinten Dormady and Jauan Jennings, enrolled early back in January. The only one not to do so was Sheriron Jones of Moreno Valley, California.

Jones, a four-star dual-threat QB, was a Florida Gator commit for almost a half a year when he decommitted in early December after the Gators hired Jim McElwain as their head coach, replacing Will Muschamp after four years as head coach. Jones almost immediately named Tennessee his leader, and a month later, he committed to the Vols.

When Jones committed, Tennessee already had two quarterbacks in their 2015 class and had returning starter Josh Dobbs and backup Nathan Peterman still on roster. Peterman transferred mere days before National Signing Day, however, making Jones’s commitment even more significant than previously thought.

According to stats compiled by 247Sports, through 7 games Jones completed 84-of-127 passes for 1,632 yards and 17 touchdowns, rushing for 3 more.

Each quarterback in the 2015 class brings a different style to the table, but Jones’s brand may look somewhat familiar to current Vol fans.

At 6-2, 191 lbs, Jones isn’t extremely tall, but he’s right at the sweet spot for more mobile, elusive QB’s. He’s very quick on his feet and has good pocket awareness, escaping to prolong plays or simply tucking and running to make his own plays. His arm strength is good, and he has an overall field presence that isn’t common in most high school seniors.

To say Jones is somewhat like current Vol QB Josh Dobbs wouldn’t be too far of a stretch. Jones comes in at almost exactly the same height and weight that Dobbs did as a freshman, and the two have very similar styles of play. If Dobbs’s performance in the last half of the 2014 season is an indication of what that type of player can do in this type of offense, the future may be very bright for Sheriron Jones.
