Several Vols Expected To Miss Spring Practice

Butch Jones confirmed on Friday, during the introductory press conference for new Vol offensive coordinator Mike DeBord, that several Tennessee players will miss spring practice.

Defensive end Derek Barnett, wide receiver Jason Croom, tight end Alex Ellis and defensive lineman Danny O’Brien, along with newcomers Kyle Phillips and Darrin Kirkland Jr, will all miss spring practice according to Jones.

Jones also confirmed that wide receiver Marquez North, defensive lineman Corey Vereen, running back Jalen Hurd and newcomer Chance Hall will each be limited in spring practice.

The missed time is especially unfortunate for Kirkland. The true freshman is expected to compete for the Vols’ starting middle linebacker job. Kirkland obviously still has a chance to win the job (or at least contend for significant playing time), but missing the additional practice time certainly hurts his chances.

However, Kirkland will still benefit from watching film and being in position group meetings. Overall, just being on campus will at least be a benefit for the talented young linebacker.

Each of the above mentioned players, barring any additional setbacks, should be good to go by the time fall camp rolls around.
