Butch Jones “Encouraged” By Freshman Quarterback Quinten Dormady

The general assumption of most Vol fans is that true freshman quarterback Quinten Dormady will end up being Josh Dobbs’ backup.

Tennessee head coach Butch Jones indicated, at his pre-spring practice press conference, that Dormady and incoming freshman Sheriron Jones would compete for the number two quarterback spot.

Given the fact that Dormady is an early enrollee, it would be wise to assume that he has the advantage over Jones.

After Butch’s comments on Tuesday, I think it’s almost a certainty that Dormady will be the backup to Dobbs this season.

"Jones: [I’ve] been very, very encouraged by Quinten. I see him making tremendous progress each and everyday. As a coach we have to keep in perspective that he should still be in high school. But I have been very, very encouraged with him. Just his overall knowledge, his fundamentals, he has a live arm. Been very encouraged by his progress so far. Each day you see him getting better and better."

Dormady, the son of a head coach, was also praised by Jones for his “football intelligence”.

Even though it’s highly likely that Dormady will be Tennessee’s backup quarterback in 2015, Vol fans should still be extremely excited about fellow freshman quarterback Jauan Jennings.

Jennings was also praised by Jones on Tuesday.

"Jones: Jauan continues to progress as well. The thing that I like about Jauan is he has a workmanlike approach each and every day he comes. He works to improve something each and everyday."

The Vols, despite the inexperience behind Dobbs, are finally in great shape when it comes to quarterbacks.

There will be an obvious dropoff if something happens to Dobbs, but Tennessee — when it comes to talent — is in a much better quarterback situation than they were a season ago.
