It’s normal for any coaching transition to cause a little bit of roster turnover, even if the hire is viewed as a positive one by most of the parties involved.
The Vols announced on Tuesday, March 31 that Rick Barnes, formerly the head coach of the Texas Longhorns, was hired as Tennessee’s new head basketball coach. Only two days later, and the Vols are dealing with their first roster attrition.
Tariq Owens, a freshman during the 2014-15 season, met with Barnes today and reportedly asked to be released from his scholarship.
Owens played sparingly to begin the season, but his role increased as the season went on. Owens even started 5 games late in the season. In 28 appearances, Owens averaged 1.2 points, 1.1 rebounds, and 7.6 minutes per game.
At 6-10, Owens was easily the tallest starter on the Vols roster this season. However, Owens was also one of the skinniest players on the roster as well with only 205 lbs on his 6-10 frame.
Tariq Owens is reported to want to visit St. John’s and potentially other schools before deciding where to transfer. His departure will leave a void in the post for Barnes’ first team this season.
