30. Track and Field Success

Amidst all the greatness in the athletic department over the past 20 years, the track and field programs deserve a mention. The programs altogether generated four national championships, and they only have six in school history.

The success starts with the Men’s Outdoor Track & Field program, which won its third national championship in school history in 2001. It is the only one of the programs with any national championship.

After that, let’s move on to Men’s Indoor Track and Field. Here we have a program that never won a national championship until the Adidas era. This championship was won in 2002 with the help of lots of football players, including Rashad Baker, Jabari Greer, and Leonard Scott. It also had all world-class speedster Justin Gatlin.

The women’s Indoor Track and Field program has also achieved unprecedented success during this time with two national championships in 2005 and 2009. Those are the first two national championships won during their history, so they deserved a mention as well.

Altogether, the Tennessee Track and Field program could not be ignored among one of the highlights during the Adidas era.

So while it is indeed just track and field, these athletes deserved a mention.
