Overall Running Back Evaluation

It is understandable with Jalen Hurd and Alvin Kamara why many top-notch running backs for this year’s class will not want to go to Tennessee. And there is a good chance the Vols do not bring anybody in.

However, they need another back added to the roster just for some guaranteed depth down the road. It is not the biggest deal in the world if they do not add one, but adding a back will not hurt. Bringing in a couple of running backs would be icing on the cake.

And adding an elite back is extra candles on the cake. Butch Jones does not need to settle because he appears to want to run a by-committee system, and right now, even if that means going with Hurd and Kamara, injuries could always take a toll. He needs to be prepared for that.

As a result, one more running back will be a huge addition going forward for the Vols. The backfield is set for the next two years barring serious injuries, but you still have the prospect of Hurd potentially leaving early after 2016 and something bad happening to one of those two backs.

Even with Treyvon Paulk and Joe Young, a little more depth would certainly go a long way.
