10. Outside Linebacker

This is contingent upon what happens at another position, which we will address later. But considering that Jalen Reeves-Maybin could change positions, the fact that Curt Maggitt is expected to line up at end a lot this year, and the fact that with so many spread offenses now the Vols are likely to run more of a 4-2-5 defense, there is likely to be a lot of competition for the outside linebacker spot.

Veterans like senior Chris Weatherd could be in the running to take the spot, as could returning players Cortez McDowell, Elliott Berry, or redshirt freshman Gavin Bryant. And there is some incoming new talent on the outside in Quarte Sapp, who is one of the freshmen who could see the field early, and Austin Smith. Both of those freshmen are expected to eventually make an impact. It could just happen sooner than expected.

Overall, there is not as much to see at this position as there is at other positions, but do not be surprised if a competition opens up at this position simply due to other situations that eventually lead us to this point. There is a very strong chance that happens during this year’s Fall Camp, and it could completely turn the linebacker situation on its head.

That is ironic as well, by the way, when you consider the fact that this is supposed to be one of the positions where the Vols are loaded. They are simply very young as well with lots of incoming talent that is supposed to be elite.
