But they also struggled on defense, giving up 479 yards and really only holding on to win the game due to four Louisiana-Lafayette turnovers.

Kentucky had early control of the game, to be fair, and just appeared to not have much depth or ability to keep control when they take their foots off of the pedal. It is indeed a concern if they have those same problems going forward, but a win is a win, and Louisiana-Lafayette is a good enough team that beating them earns you more points than blowing out Southern Miss or Southeast Missouri State.

To surpass the Ragin’ Cajuns you have to blow them out in extremely impressive fashion, which is what puts a few other teams on this list.

Still, Kentucky may be much-improved, and a bowl game remains a major possibility. They just need to avoid making those mistakes on defense again.

Kentucky Wildcats 1-0 (0-0)

Last week: Defeated Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns 40-33
Last rank: 13

Mark Stoops’s Kentucky Wildcats surprisingly jumped two spots after a close victory over a mediocre Group of Five opponent on Saturday, but the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns have proven for multiple years running now that they are a very good team at their level.

As such, since it is still FBS play, the Wildcats deserve some quality win points, which is what bumps them up above the Mississippi State Bulldogs and the Missouri Tigers. Kentucky had a very balanced offensive attack Saturday with Patrick Towles throwing for 257 yards and three touchdowns and also the team rushing for 178 yards and two touchdowns.

But they also struggled on defense, giving up 479 yards and really only holding on to win the game due to four Louisiana-Lafayette turnovers.
