Special Teams Grades

Kicking: B

Aaron Medley once again missed a field goal beyond 40 yards, which is not okay, but he did make a 19-yard field goal. And he also did not miss an extra point. The big thing for him as well was the fact that he did not allow many returns on kickoffs, mostly kicking the ball out of the back of the end zone for a touchback.

Because of all this, we will give Medley credit for doing what he was supposed to do in this game. But it would be nice if he could nail those 40-plus yarders.

  • Punting: A

This was the highlight of the game. Trevor Daniel punted the ball nine time for 450 yards. And yes, if you do the math, that is an average of 50 yards per punt. Whenever you hit that average, you had a great game.

Daniel also had a 61-yard punt and nailed three punts inside the 20-yard line. The only thing that kept this from being an A+ is that he did have one punt for a touchback. But overall, Daniel was great.

In fact, Daniel reversed field many times to single-handedly keep the Vols in control of this game until the fourth-quarter collapse.

    Return Game: C

You can’t give this grade a failure because there were not many chances for a return. Cameron Sutton had nowhere to go on most punt returns, and Evan Berry did not have many chances to return kickoffs.

He still returned three and had one nullified because of a disastrous penalty when he appeared to have the Vols in position to go for a game-winning field goal when it was tied 17-17. So that is a knock on the return game.

And its failure to generate anything as a whole is why it has a C here.

    Overall Special Teams Grade: B+

The average of these three factors would appear to add up to a B, but the punting game was the biggest factor, and weighing them all and the impacts they had on the game, you can do that to bump this grade up to a B+.

Special teams was not the problem by a long shot in this loss. Aaron Medley continues to do the base of what you need a kicker to do, which deserves respect, the return game did not do anything to lose the game, and the punting game led by Trevor Daniel made a huge impact on the game in a good way.

You could not ask for much more on special teams.
