Arkansas Wins 28-24

At the time, the Arkansas Razorbacks had not beaten the Vols in seven years, and they came extremely close the previous two years. We’ll get to one of those in a moment.

But in this game, they were 5-3 getting set to host the 7-1 Tennessee Volunteers. Tennessee’s only loss was to Florida, but the week before they had just moved up to No. 2 in the BCS standings over undefeated Virginia Tech because of schedule strength thanks to an upset over Penn State, the other undefeated team, that weekend.

  • Everything was looking up for the Vols. But Arkansas scored first off of a Tee Martin interception to take a 7-0 lead. The Vols responded though to go up 10-7, then Arkansas came right back to score and make it 14-10.

A Tee Martin touchdown run and a 29-yard third quarter touchdown run by Travis Henry put Tennessee up 24-14, and all Vol fans were relaxing. They were going to hold onto this game and get out of there at 8-1.

    But Arkansas had other goals.

Clint Stoerner lead a quick touchdown drive to make it 24-21, and he led another game-winning drive late in the fourth to go up 28-24. Tennessee would have its chances on a final drive, but despite getting into the red zone, a Tee Martin pass sailed out of the back of the end zone on fourth down.

Arkansas held on to win 28-24 and dashed the Vols’ national title hopes. Tennessee finished the season 9-3, its worst year since 1994, and Arkansas finished 8-4 after a Cotton Bowl win over Texas. Both teams finished the year ranked.

But for the Razorbacks, this win was sweet revenge over what happened the previous year. And that is our No. 1 game.
