1. Continue to Develop Mental Toughness

We do not need to go out on the leap yet and say that the Vols have developed any form of mental toughness just because they came back to beat the Georgia Bulldogs after they lost their best player on the first drive of the game.

  • Butch Jones and the Tennessee Vols still can’t shake the fact that they blew three two-touchdown leads this year

Coming back from one 24-3 deficit will not change that.

A legitimate argument could be made that all of the pressure was lifted off of the Vols in this one because they had nothing to lose once down 24-3. That is completely different from being locked in a fourth-quarter back and forth battle and then blowing the game.

To be fair, the Vols were incredibly clutch when they scored that fourth-quarter touchdown after giving up a game-tying touchdown from a beautiful Greyson Lambert pass.

But they have got to show more of that the rest of the day. Butch Jones has to be aware that his football team will be in plenty of other close games this season.

He can’t keep coaching with the incredible fear of losing at the end of games when things get extremely tight.

He and Joshua Dobbs have to work on leadership intangibles and keeping their team together when things get very close.

It’s hard to work on that in practice, but as the coach it is your job to help develop a team mentally. Jones needs to find ways to do that because just getting over the hump against Georgia won’t cut it.

They need to continue the momentum.
