6. 1992: Tennessee Beats Florida 31-14
It was the seminole moment of what made Phillip Fulmer eventually take over Johnny Majors’s job as head coach. The Tennessee Vols were supposed to be rebuilding that year, but as interim coach, Fulmer led them to a 2-0 record, including a game in which they shocked the Georgia Bulldogs on the road.

The next week, they were supposed to come crashing down with the No. 4 ranked Florida Gators coming to Knoxville. But in the first match-up between the two, Fulmer actually got the better of Spurrier.
The favored Gators made mistakes early after they had a punt blocked that set up a Heath Shuler touchdown run. And as the Vols took control early, a memorable rain storm took over the game, knocking it off the air of the ABC newscast.
But even with the rain, Tennessee dominated, including a memorable touchdown run from Mose Phillips Jr. off a short pass from Shuler. Tennessee controlled the contest from start to finish and shockingly dominated the Gators 31-14.
The game propelled Tennessee into the Top 10 as Coach Johnny Majors returned the next week. But the damage was done.
That win would be Fulmer’s lasting impact, and after the Vols struggled midway through the season, Majors was forced out.
This was a football game that altered the timeline of college football history. It would also be memorable because Spurrier would reel off a five-game winning streak on Fulmer after this once he became full-time head coach, signifying some sort of curse against the Vols.
We can move to those games next.
